|Abdul Hameed Kachhawala, better known as Baba Meehda, is one of the last remaining gavantris or bards of his kind. Now in his 70s, Baba Mheeda still sings with energy and vigor for up to three hours at a stretch.
Strumming his king with the right hand and keeping rhythm with a khartal in the left, he has a massive repertoire of qissas, vars, hymns and humorous songs. Unlike most gavantaris who sing only the well-known passages from qissas, Baba Meehda can sing Sassi, Veer Jodh, Sohna-Jaini, Poorn Bhagat to name a few, in their entirety.
Belonging to Amritsar district, Baba Mheeda learnt the art from his father after migrating to Pakistan.
